Companions...so many, where to start?!

Hello everyone!
I'm new to Alacrity, and am working on getting a good rhythm going, and to start my kennel. Well, I'm kind of stumped. There are many options to increase the effectiveness of training your animals, but I have NO IDEA where to start.
I know I need the trainer perk, and the scholar collar (or two) to increase the number of times I can train a day, and increase the effectiveness. That, however, is where my knowledge ends.
I know some companions increase energy, some certain attributes...but this is where my question comes in. In terms of making my 10 training sessions as effective as possible, what companions and items should I equip?
Lists, combinations, tales of personal experience...all are welcome. I just need some good info to go on. :3 Thanks everyone! Cheers!
